August 2013 - Studies You Can Join

With summer ending and fall just around the corner, it’s natural to change gears with the changing seasons. At the same time, we are reminded that breast cancer doesn’t follow any calendar.  Don’t FALL back on your commitment to create a future without breast cancer – pun intended!  Sign up for any one of our open research projects or tell a friend how they can make a difference by joining the Army of Women.

HERE are a few innovative projects looking for participants just like you:

A Pilot Study of the Flaxseed Effects on Hormones and Lignans: Role of Race, Genes, and Gut Microbiome

We need African-American and Caucasian women living in, or willing to travel to, the Buffalo, New York, area who are postmenopausal, between the ages of 45 and 75 and have never had any type of cancer (except skin cancer) to participate in a study that is using flaxseed to look at the connections between race, genes, hormones, and breast cancer risk. The purpose of this study is to determine whether adding flaxseed (a food high in compounds that can change hormones) to a regular diet changes hormones that are related to breast cancer risk and if the effect of flaxseed differs between African- American and Caucasian women.

At-Home Support for Rural Women Using Group Video Calling

We need women living in rural California counties who were diagnosed with invasive breast cancer within the past 5 years to participate in a research study evaluating an online support group that uses video calling. This study will investigate whether a professionally led breast cancer support group that uses video calling, and which women can take part in from their home, is feasible, useful, and satisfactory for breast cancer survivors in rural California.

Study of High-Dose Vitamin D Supplementation in Premenopausal Women at High Risk for Breast Cancer

We need premenopausal women ages 18 to 50 anywhere in the US who are at high risk of developing breast cancer to participate in a study evaluating the effects of vitamin D on breast density. The research team is studying whether high-dose vitamin D supplements can prevent breast cancer in high-risk women by reducing breast density, as seen on mammography.

I would so like to participate in the flax seed study. I’ve been eating them almost daily since 1998. Is there a way to participate living in Green Bay, Wisconsin and not having to travel to New York? :-)

I’m 57 and have been told by a breast surgeon when I thought I had a lump, just lumpy breast it turns out, that I have the breasts of a twenty year old. I always wondered if it was because of my flax seed consumption.

Anyway, just thought I would see if it’s possible to participate from a distance.

Thank you for your time!

The vitamin D study is interesting as 3 months before I was diagnosed with breast cancer my vitamin D levels ere low enough to be put on a megadose and now 2ooo units a day. What is the correlation if any?
