June 2013 - Studies You Can Join

June is National Cancer Survivors Month! This month and every month, the Army of Women works to honor the lives touched and taken at the hands of this disease by fast-tracking research that will discover the causes and ways to prevent breast cancer, ending this disease for future generations.

We have come so far, but there is still so much work to be done!  Help us honor those touched by breast cancer by joining one of our open research studies:

Asian American Community Health Initiative

We need Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander women age 20 and older who live in San Francisco, Contra Costa, Alameda, San Mateo, or Santa Clara counties and have never had any type of cancer to complete a mailed survey and phone interview developed to identify breast cancer risk factors. The survey and interview can be conducted in English, Chinese (Cantonese or Mandarin), or Tagalog.  The overall goal of this study is to gather information that can help us understand why breast cancer rates are high and increasing among some Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander women in the San Francisco Bay Area. To do this the research team needs to gather information from both women with and without breast cancer. The research team has already enrolled women with breast cancer; therefore the Army of Women is only recruiting women who have never had breast cancer.

Effects of Depo Provera on Breast Tissue Study

We need women ages 18-39 in the Los Angeles area, without a history of any cancer, who are currently receiving or starting intra-muscular injections of Depo Provera.  The purpose of this study is to gain a better understanding of the effects of Depo Provera, which contains a high dose of a synthetic progestin, on the breast tissue.

Interpersonal Therapy for Depression in Breast Cancer Study

We need female OR male breast cancer survivors in the New York City area who have been feeling down, sad, or depressed who are interested in trying talk therapy – with sessions in English OR Spanish!  The purpose of this study is to see which type of talk therapy is the most effective treatment for depression in women and men who have had a breast cancer diagnosis. It is open to women and men who were diagnosed with stage I-IV breast cancer more than six months ago.

Phase Ib Trial of 2nd Generation Designer T Cells in Metastatic Breast Cancer

We need women or men with stage IV, metastatic breast cancer who live near or are willing to travel to the Roger Williams Medical Center in Providence, Rhode Island. The purpose of this Phase Ib clinical trial is to determine whether a high dose of designer T cells is better when given with or without interleukin 2 (IL2), a drug that is thought to stimulate the immune system. The researcher would like to enroll about 12 people who have received at least two prior chemotherapies that failed OR at least one prior hormonal therapy and one prior chemotherapy that failed.

I’m sorry, but I don’t meet the criteria for any of the above-referenced studies.
